Introduction
Micro Air Vehicles (MAVs) are the smallest man-made flying machines. They are flying robots and have the weight and size of small birds. Innovation in navigation, control and processing technology has made
this possible.
There are still numerous scientific challenges to be solved in order to fly Micro Air Vehicles under all flight and weather conditions. The development of miniaturized structures, propulsion and navigation systems, aerodynamics, flight controllers, actuators and sensors are just a few of the current research topics in the field of MAVs.
In 2004, the German Institute of Navigation (DGON) hosted the 1st European Micro Air Vehicle Conference (EMAV 2004) in Braunschweig, Germany, attended by more than 100 international scientist.
The conference shall serve as a platform to exchange information on the state-of-the-art of MAVs. Thus, the German Institute of Navigation cordially invites everyone from Science, Industry, Military, and Government Agencies to participate in this conference. In addition to scientific presentations and discussions the latest developments towards autonomous MAVs will be demonstrated during an outdoor flight competition and technical exhibition.
DGON highly appreciates the co-operation with Deutscher Aero Club, and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Luft- und Raumfahrt - Lilienthal-Oberth, as well as the co-sponsorship by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and expresses thanks for their outstanding assistance and support.

Flight Competition
The European Micro Aerial Vehicle Conference EMAV 2008 will be held in Braunschweig, Germany. In addition to the scientific conference program, the EMAV 2008 also comprises a competition for Micro Aerial Vehicles (MAV). This competition is divided into two parts: An indoor competition in Braunschweig in the arena of Volkswagenhalle and an outdoor competition at the gliderport in Gifhorn-Wilsche, approx. 30 km north of Braunschweig. Both, the indoor and the outdoor event, consist of two different competitions. One of them focuses on flight dynamics and manoeuvrability and the second one emphasises autonomous flight.
Rules and regulations have been sent to the flight-participants with the notification. They are also permanently available on the DGON-Web-Site <www.dgon.de>.
